ASCE recognizes Carrington’s leadership in transmission line engineering

HAILEY, Idaho (April 10, 2017) ‒ The Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers has awarded its 2017 Gene Wilhoite Award to Ron Carrington, a senior project director at POWER Engineers Incorporated and a member of POWER’s Board of Directors.

The Gene Wilhoite Award is given to ASCE members who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the art and science of transmission line engineering. Carrington received the award at the SEI Structures Congress in Denver on April 7.

“You would be hard-pressed to find anyone who has more expertise than Ron Carrington in transmission line design,” said Bret Moffett, POWER CEO. “He is highly respected in the industry, and POWER is very fortunate to have Ron’s commitment to the industry and his focus on mentoring the next generation of structural transmission line engineers.”

As a member of ASCE since 1993, Carrington has served as a Task Committee member on Guidelines for Electrical Transmission Line Structural Loading, Third Edition, ASCE Manuals and Reports on Engineering Practice No. 74. He is currently the vice chairman of the Task Committee developing the Fourth Edition of Manual 74. He also has served as a member of the Electrical Transmission and Substation Steering Committee for 2006, 2009, 2012, 2015 conferences, as well as the planned 2018 conference. Carrington is currently the chairman of the ASCE Electrical Transmission Structures Committee.

Carrington is dedicated to establishing and promoting standards and codes for transmission, distribution and substation structural design by actively participating in industry organizations, primarily ASCE and IEEE. He has authored numerous papers on transmission topics ranging from permitting, HVDC, transmission line design, failure analysis and line uprating.

Carrington has more than 30 years of experience in the engineering of power delivery projects. He plays a principal role in bringing complex transmission projects to completion. Experienced in all phases of power delivery engineering and consulting, Carrington’s current focus is serving as the owner’s engineer for two long-haul, multi-state transmission projects.

He was instrumental in creating POWER Engineers’ Power Delivery Design Conference, which attracts utility participants from across the United States and other parts of the world. At the 2017 conference, nearly 300 of the nation’s top electric utility managers and engineers gathered in Sun Valley, Idaho, to learn from the best in the business. Much of the success of the conference is due to Carrington’s vision and leadership talent.

Carrington received his B.S. in civil engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.
