Clean Line Energy Awards HVDC Transmission Engineering Contract to POWER Engineers
POWER Engineers has been awarded a contract by Clean Line Energy Partners, LLC (Clean Line) to perform preliminary engineering design and budgetary analysis for Phase I of the Plains & Eastern Clean Line project, a planned 800-mile HVDC transmission line originating in the Panhandle Region of Oklahoma and extending east into Tennessee. A second HVDC line is also under consideration as a future Phase II of the Plains & Eastern project.
“Clean Line realizes that the proper siting, engineering and construction of a project of this magnitude will require close coordination with many stakeholders and the concerted efforts of a highly qualified and committed team,” said Clean Line Vice President Wayne Galli. “We look forward to working closely with POWER on this exciting project.”
When constructed, Phase I of the Plains & Eastern Clean Line will be capable of transmitting 3,500 MW of electricity from potential wind farm sites in western Oklahoma to markets in the Southeast. The project is expected to take five to seven years to complete at an estimated cost of $1.8 billion and has the potential to spur up to $12 billion in additional wind energy development.
“The Plains & Eastern Clean Line project represents a significant opportunity to connect the Southeast U.S. to vital wind locations in the Plains Region via a high-efficiency, high-voltage HVDC transmission line,” said POWER Executive Vice President Bill Eisinger. “We’re pleased to have been selected to assist in the design of this critical transmission line.”
Clean Line selected POWER because of its extensive capabilities in the areas of transmission line design and HVDC transmission systems. POWER also has significant experience engineering and managing large transmission line projects across the country, and is heavily involved with the implementation of several HVDC projects currently under development in the United States.
