Project: 30 MW Las Pailas Geothermal

Location: Rincon de la Vieja Volcano, Costa Rica

ICE (the national utility company of Costa Rica and a notable operator and owner of geothermal power plants) hired GeothermEx and POWER Engineers to perform a comprehensive resource and power facility feasibility evaluation of a promising geothermal resource in the northern province of Costa Rica, near the Rincon de la Vieja volcano. POWER performed a cycle evaluation and capital cost estimating study which evaluated the applicability of two comparative approaches: a single-flash plant with a wet cooling tower and a two-unit binary plant with a dry cooling tower. POWER’s team modeled and evaluated the costs and benefits of these plant configuration approaches and developed pre-design manuals and comprehensive cost estimates for both. The manuals and estimates were provided in both Spanish and English versions.

The pre-design manuals were developed to serve ICE as the basis for a solid EPC bid tender for the selected alternative. The manuals included the following:
