Building 2 Blind Rehabilitation Clinic

< Back to projects

Client: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Puget Sound Health Care System
Location: American Lake, Washington

Our team provided programming, planning and architectural design services for the renovations on the third floor of Building 2 to provide a new Blind Rehabilitation Clinic. The design maximizes the existing floor plate with inpatient rooms, examinations rooms, and training apartment for visually impaired patients. The clinic portion includes a patient exercise area, manual skills shop, and arts and crafts workshop.  Our design services included revising existing patient bathrooms to correct shower heads.  Planning and design of the clinic was closely coordinated with end-users, clinicians and other specialties.

The original campus was constructed in the mid-1920s and is considered an important example of the Spanish Colonial Revival style of Architecture.  In 2008, the core of the American Lake campus, including Building 2, was listed in the National Register of Historic Places.  For this reason, all renovations in Building 2 required close coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office.
