Building 4 Domiciliary Renovation and Addition

< Back to projects

Client: U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Puget Sound Health Care System
Location: American Lake, Washington

The project consisted of a $4.2 million renovation and addition to the 26,000 square foot, 60-bed domiciliary and clinic.  The building is considered a contributing structure within the American Lake Veterans Hospital historic district.  Scope of work included demolition of the existing one-story center wing and construction of a new, two-story 4,500 square foot addition.  A new elevator was added and associated renovations required upgrades to existing patient bathrooms and showers.  New structural, HVAC, and electrical systems were included along with the ADA upgrades.

This mission revival-style building is listed on the Washington Heritage Register and all design was reviewed and approved by the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer.  The design-build team provided architectural / historic design services.  Demolition included abatement of hazardous building materials.

The existing and new construction was unified with an interior design approach focused on use of functional, durable finishes.  Selection was coordinated with VA to be consistent with the interior design of other buildings on the campus while providing comfortable, healing surroundings for occupants.
