POWER’s in-house team of well-respected and widely known bat experts has applied its unique bat expertise to a wide range of resource management and mission-driven projects at Department of Defense (DOD) installations across the U.S. We have expertise in all basic bat study techniques, including mist netting, hibernaculum inventory, white-nose surveillance, passive and active acoustical monitoring, and radio telemetry. In addition, we are experienced with and permitted to conduct Indiana and gray bat U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) protocol surveys throughout the species’ ranges and have years of experience with the northern Myotis, a species recently proposed for listing under the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Idaho National Guard Orchard Combat Training Center (OCTC)
To address a new DOD white-nose syndrome management policy and recent petitions to list several common bat species under ESA, the Idaho Army National Guard contracted with POWER to develop a program for long-term management and monitoring of bat resources at the OCTC. POWER prepared a bat management and monitoring plan to be implemented by base biologists, established a collaborative monitoring framework with resource agency partners, set up a system of automated passive acoustical monitoring stations at OCTC caves, assessed bat habitats, and conducted hibernaculum surveys. The project allows the National Guard to better address new direction from USFWS or state agencies that could impact future training or operations.
Patuxent River Naval Air Station (NAS)
POWER used acoustic surveys and mist netting at the Patuxent River NAS to determine the presence of sensitive bat species during the summer maternity season. POWER surveyed sites within the project area using spatial coverage to maximize the information provided to the Navy. Survey results helped the Navy manage its natural resources and avoid mission conflicts by increasing understanding of bat species diversity on the base during the summer maternity season, as well as the spatial distribution of bat species across the base.
