Mitsubishi Heavy Industries was awarded the EPC contract to develop the 64 MW two-unit Olkaria II geothermal project, funded by KenGen, in conjunction with a loan from the World Bank. POWER was awarded the contract for mechanical piping and instrumentation and control system design for the new plant, involving close coordination with MHI’s electrical engineering and construction contractors. POWER also coordinated mechanical and piping design with the Kenyan civil/structural design contractor. POWER’s scope included preparation of specifications, solicitation of bids, vendor selection and initiation of procurement and expediting of major equipment including NCG equipment, steam dryers, pumps, control valves, cooling towers and plant instrumentation. Other POWER services included conceptual design and EPC bid development, mechanical and I&C design for the two-unit 64 MW geothermal plant, mechanical balance of plant equipment specification and procurement, steamfield communication and control system and construction support.
