POWER Engineers provided engineering services for a 77 MW flash geothermal plant at the San Jacinto site in Nicaragua. The plant is designed around the Fuji 38.5 MW single flash top-exhaust geothermal turbine. The multi-phase project involves a complicated site and wellfield integration of two new flash condensing units with an existing 10 MW wellhead backpressure unit already in operation. The Geothermal Energy Association (GEA) gave the plant its 2012 Honors Award in the category of Economic Development for technical achievement and commercial excellence. Using renewable resources, the plant will increase Nicaragua’s overall electricity generating capacity by 10%.
