EDP Renewables (formerly Horizon Wind Energy) develops, constructs, owns and operates wind farms throughout North America. POWER has been providing a range of SCADA and analytical services at numerous installations. POWER has provided SCADA design services for overall wind farm communication architecture, substation integration, and touch panel human-machine interfaces (HMI). One task involved developing a custom power factor controller for the company’s six-stage capacitor banks. Using a highly integrated approach, POWER used a combination of user-programmable setpoints from the HMI, metering data from revenue meters (switchable between local metering and remote via HMI), voltage data from relays, and status data from the SCADA system to control the power factor and bus voltage at the collector substation levels. When necessary, POWER has developed advanced revenue metering schemes to properly allocate line losses when multiple wind farms share a common interconnect transmission line.
In addition to SCADA, POWER has developed protective relay and logic processor settings, performed arc flash analysis and performed fault and coordination studies. We have also developed a standardized protection design (including AC/DC schematics, panel layouts and bill of materials), protective relaying criteria, and templatized protective relaying calculation workbooks to be used on future EDPR projects. This standardized design allows EDPR to maintain consistency between wind farms making it easier to maintain and operate these facilities.
