6 MW / 48 MWh Bunker Road Repowering Program BESS

< Back to projects

Client: National Grid
Location: Massachusetts

For two decades, Nantucket has relied on two 30-mile submarine cables backed up by diesel generators to support its energy needs. The generators are nearing the end of their useful lives, and it was found that a third cable would be needed in the next 12 years to meet growing demand on the island. To address the aging infrastructure, curtail the need for a third cable, and bolster the island’s emergency backup power, National Grid is implementing a hybrid battery/gas turbine system at its Bunker Road substation. POWER was contracted as Owner’s Engineer for the project, which will be able to power essential loads on Nantucket in the event of a total power failure.
