Namakwa Sands 13.7 MW CO-H2 Generation Design - South Africa

Client: Group Five
Location: South Africa

POWER provided final design and construction documents for an off-gas generating plant at Exxaro’s Namakwa Sands mineral sands smelter in South Africa. The power plant uses CO-H2 off-gases from the smelting process to generate up to 13.7 MW at the titanium, slag, and pig iron smelter on the north coast of the Western Cape Province. The plant interconnects to the 33 kV Smelter Plant Consumer Substation and offsets power taken from the national grid. At buildout, the power plant uses eight GE Jenbacher JGS 620 GS-SL reciprocating engines operating at 2.5 MVA/1.7 MW in a simple cycle configuration. The engines are fired by a mix of carbon monoxide and hydrogen released during the smelting process.
